Personality disorders cause individuals to be inflexible and rigid in how they perceive themselves and the ways in which they interact with others and the world around them.

Individuals with personality disorders have difficulties with interpersonal functioning, and their emotional responses may be more intense or extreme in social or personal situations and therefore this may cause conflict in multiple aspects of one’s life. Living with a person who has a personality disorder can feel very overwhelming for some, as emotional connectedness can vacillate from extreme ends, where one minute a loved one feels idealized and valued, and then next devalued or rejected. This can be very confusing and cause significant uncertainty and vulnerability in interpersonal relationships.

Personality disorders take time to develop and cannot be diagnosed until adulthood (18+). Research indicates that there is not one specific factor that influences the development of a personality disorder. However, genetics can play role in disordered personality traits. Children from abusive and/or neglectful home environments, or who have experienced other forms of trauma are more susceptible to developing personality disorders later on in life due to enduring more long-standing pain, conflict, distrust, and dysfunction in family systems and within interpersonal relationships.

Therapy can help individuals with personality disorders develop ways to decrease emotional suffering and promote connectedness. At Metta Psychology Group, our therapists are skilled at providing skills and techniques that can help individuals better manage their stress level and emotionality. Therapy can also serve as a space to be validated and understood, with the hopes of establishing healthy, independent relationships between family, friends, and other support systems. Additionally, through a comprehensive assessment, our psychologists can provide insight on whether current symptoms may signify deeper concerns and what treatment approaches are best suited for each individual’s needs.
