From a psychological standpoint, it is not uncommon for young adults to experience feelings of sadness, anger, depression, anxiety, or frustration as a result of stressors related to interpersonal relationships, family concerns, academic or professional development, identity development, or other important life transitions.

Some young adults can find effective coping strategies to regulate their emotions by seeking support through trusted confidants, problem-solving, and engaging in wellness strategies. However, other young adults may experience a sense of emotional dysregulation, which is an inability to control or regulate emotional responses effectively.

Young adults who struggle with emotional dysregulation often experience intense emotions that can be positive (i.e., excitement, happiness) or negative (i.e., sadness, anger, anxiety). The emotions are often described as overwhelming and varying in intensity, depending upon the response to the perceived stressors. Studies indicate that young adults who struggle with emotional dysregulation have greater difficulty with establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships, feel less fulfilled in life, and are at greater risk for depression, anxiety, binge-eating, substance abuse, and other destructive behaviors. In addition, emotional dysregulation can place tremendous stress on a young adult’s family and/or support system. Many parents and friends feel overwhelmed, frustrated, and helpless in the process of trying to offer help to loved ones struggling with emotional disturbance.

Therapy can help young adults develop ways to decrease emotional suffering and promote connectedness. At Metta Psychology Group, our therapists are skilled at providing skills and techniques that can help young adults better manage their stress level and emotionality. Therapy can also serve as a space for young adults to be validated and understood, with the hopes of establishing healthy, independent relationships between family, friends, and other support systems.
